Spartans and Prison, A Match Made in East Lansing
Mar 23rd
It was a busy day for Teflon Dantonio’s boys. Glenn Winston, formerly reinstated by the never criticized coach, was sentenced to his 2nd stint in the clink in less than a year. He’ll be doing six months for his role in the ski-masked raid of a campus residence building. Allow me to bring in an impartial judge, Mr. Rittenburg of ESPN….
I keep thinking back to Dantonio’s surprising decision to reinstate Winston in August. I’m not against second chances, and Winston, who comes from a very rough background, absolutely deserved one. But Michigan State took an enormous risk in bringing him back to campus, especially since his actions directly impacted another student-athlete (Sturges). As we now know, the decision totally backfired on Dantonio.
Yes, but learning from your mistakes is the most important thing. I would imagine that next time, Dantonio will be more strict about who he lets back on campus. Or not. Today, Dantonio reinstated four players convicted in last year’s residence hall assault. So there’s that.
Oh, and the best part….the headline in the Freep: ”Glenn Winston Apologizes for Role in Dorm Altercation.” Fuck you Mark Snyder.
But we’re not done….
Mateen Cleaves, the pride of Spartyville, the better half and namesake of the Izzo lovechild, and the 2nd biggest NBA disappointment in history behind Shawn Respert, got arrested for DUI. That my friends, is spectacular.
Sparty on fellas.

Day 1 Leaders
Mar 18th
Quick note to everyone that is used to the old software we previously deployed here for the tourney pool… On the left hand side there is a menu button that says “stats.” Pretty much everything you are looking for and more is in that menu. Scenarios, picks by team, and pick counts by game are all in there. For those that can’t seem to find that menu, it’s right here.
Congrats to our day 1 leaders…
1st (tie) – CJ King
1st (tie) – Alex Van Loon #2
3rd - 10-way tie
We think it’s important to mention that CJ often gets out to these early leads (like in bean bag toss at the tailgate)…and he rarely prevails.
Also, 8pm makes for a really long tailgate.

Things are bad.
Things are really bad.
But beating Michigan State is good. Whether it’s football, figure skating, basket weaving, or hockey. And this weekend, it was hockey. A sweep of the Spartans moves the Wolverines into the CCHA semifinals at the Joe…for the 21st consecutive time.

From the Big Ten tournament press release…
For only the sixth time in conference history, three teams shared the Big Ten Championship. Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue earned a share of the 2010 Big Ten crown after completing the regular season with identical 14-4 marks in conference action. The last time three teams shared the conference title was in 2002 when Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin ended the year at 11-5. Ohio State also finished 11-5 in 2002, but later vacated their share of the title.
So, there was a three-way-tie for the title, and that means the tournament is gonna be Awesome (yes, with a capital ‘A’).
Michigan tips off at 2:30pm against Iowa, and it’s the first game of the day, so you can count on the tip off to be on time. So, if you get ESPN2 in your cubicle, you should be all set. Actually, the audio and the video will probably show up on the internet somewhere…and someone will tweet about it. I’ll retweet when I get the details.
Winner plays The Assholes at noon on Friday.
