  • Reports are in that Mike Massey is out for the season. This makes the Carson Butler reinstatement a stellar move by Lloyd. Without Butler, we are looking at walk-ons, has-beens, and never-will-bes…you know, like Mike Massey.
  • Michigan will become the first team to be a part of the BTN hat-trick, with 3 consecutive games on the network that you can’t get in Ann Arbor. Ya, that makes sense.
  • Congrats to Shawn Crable on being named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the week. Five tackles for loss? I barely noticed. Oh ya, I forgot Shawn has been dead to me since this. INSIDE-OUT MAN! INSIDE OUT!
  • We now know that Henne had a ligament tear in his knee. We know because he said so. Wow. What would have happened if we were told what the injury was back when the injury happened? Way to go Fort Schembechler. You have shown once again you can keep a pointless secret.
  • And in the MUST SEE VIDEO OF THE YEAR, an ESPN story on Russelloyd, (via MGoBlog) the hottest couple since Bennifer whose relationship is single handedly replacing recruits lost by the App State disaster. Better yet, it’s narrated by the My Wish Guy, Chris Connelley.

On with the brief injury report:

  • RB Carlos Brown:  3rd on the depth chart at RB behind Hart and Minor.  Slated to return kicks and punts before injury.  Had surgery on his right hand last Tuesday.  Should be back sooner than originally expected.  Lloyd says he may be playing or practicing by Oregon.
  • OL Alex Mitchell: undisclosed.  Probable starter before injury. Word is he’ll miss ASU game and probably Oregon.
  • OL Jeremy Ciulla: undisclosed.  Probable starter. Missed a week of practice.  Should be OK for start of season.

No less than 15 for me. Well, I’m not pissed…I’m just disappointed. To be honest, I don’t have any emotion left…November 18th took it all out of me.

It’s time to refocus whatever anger and pain you may feel towards “the Florida coach,” the former Florida coach, or the monkeys with darts over at the Harris poll…and direct it towards Pete Carroll. We are in the Rose Bowl folks, and if all you can think about is that this is a consolation game, then shame on you. It’s Michigan vs. USC, a rematch of the 2003 Rose Bowl, and most likely a battle for #1…not for this year, but in next year’s preseason polls. Seems like pre-season placement factors in to this BCS crap…so maybe that’s important. Ya, probably not.

I am caught halfway between “giddy with anticipation” and “scared shitless of what the fans are capable of.” Either way, I am worthless at work and sleepless at home. It’s not because I’m caught up in the X’s and O’s of Saturday’s contest, for I am not an X’s and O’s type of guy. This game is and always will be about emotion. Win or lose, you’ll probably be able to find me after the game in tears.

“Throw out the record books” is a phrase often used to describe rivalry games, but that doesn’t do justice to Michigan-Ohio State. There will be two completely teams on the field from the ones you’ve been watching all season. Hits will be harder, everything and everyone will be faster, and sound from referee whistles will take longer to register in the ears of the players. 
Unless you’re John Dogan, this is the biggest regular season college football game to occur in your lifetime.

All this time I thought that people nationwide were destructing property and setting fires. But it’s just us. So get out the toilet paper, eggs, and door knocking devices and head out to the streets to cause some mayhem. If you are in or around the city of Detroit, you might need to step it up a notch, so get some gasoline and burn down a crack house or two. You can always go the other route and be a big wuss and try to stop Devil’s Night by participating in Angel’s Night. Either way, remember that the important thing is that you have fun, dress up, and steal candy from children.

It seems the rumors from last week were true, and Adrian Arrington was arraigned on the Wednesday before the Iowa game for a domestic spat with his girlfriend. Lloyd chose to believe AA’s story and allow him to play. Now that there is a question of whether alcohol was involved, the 20-year old receiver might have found himself in slightly deeper shit. Link to the freep article here. There’s a November 1st court date, and I am hoping for this to all get straightened out with some community service and perhaps a first-half suspension for Ball State. Because while I’m all about class and keeping players in line, that November 1st court date is much less important than November 18th’s date with destiny.

Mike Hart and Mario Manningham, who by my gorilla math make up about 95% of the Michigan offense, were injured during the scrimmage against Michigan Agricultural College on Saturday. While Hart says he is good to go, Manningham has been shipped to Siberia, and will be unable to discuss his injury (or lack thereof) until Lloyd thinks it’s time. Manningham, who provided the miracle finish against Penn State last season in the Big House, will apparently be inactive for this year’s contest against the Nittany Lions. He injured his knee in the 3rd quarter and was seen icing it on the bench in the 4th quarter. MGoBlog has received reports from some students that have seen him on crutches on campus. Could be more than just a week…but unless it’s six weeks, Mario will be back in time for OSU. I hope am sure Adrian Arrington can fill the role until Mario’s return…though it would be nice to have him for Iowa, our last meaningful game until the trip to Columbus.

In a move that will once again test our tailgating endurance, the University, in association with ABC sports, has set a kickoff time of 3:30pm for the Iowa game, extending our planned Italian theme to a 7.5 hour trattoria marathon.

It happened tonight. I have approached this football season with such cautious optimism that I have come close on several occasions to physically holding my lips together with my index finger and thumb when inspired to start spouting off about the success of this year’s Wolverines. We’re good. We’re great. Just be quiet about it. Walk with a quiet confidence like the Wolverine squad did after dismantling the Gophers. Stride together, arm-in-arm. Pick up the Little Brown Jug. High five each other. Walk back to the locker room. Sing the victors. Go home and start thinking about Michigan State. All business.

Since Notre Dame, I’ve been teetering between this quiet confidence, and exploding into a fit of joy over our performances, and now the first 5-0 start since 1999. Tonight, I read this post from Ronald Bellamy’s Underachieving All-Stars, which includes such brilliant writing and expresses my feelings so well, that I would like to hire this person to write my memoirs, which will most certainly be a best seller. Here’s an excerpt that doesn’t do it justice:

They deserve your allegiance, your respect; they deserve at least a mulligan – though after holding the 8th best run offense in America to 108 yards, at home, it seems peculiar that they’d even have to ask for one. It’s October now, and the team that last year had taken you on a disorienting waltz to the outskirts of hatred has already become the enemy of your own expectations, the ones this team has created in just four games.

Not a minute after completing the read, I got a call from The Hammer, whose emotions are often worn on his sleeve, and whose allegiance was in question during last year’s campaign.  He had also read it.  It was then that the switch flipped for me, right there on the phone. I’m no longer quietly confident.

I AM READY TO PLANT A FLAG.

And Columbus, well, that’s a story for a later date, filled with an anger so pent up, that its only parallel is the level of “pent up” I was after subbing in for Bubba after he puked at his bachelor party.

Yes, I know, a wounded Michigan Agricultural College is on deck, and the scare is still coming. It’s #6 on the list. But it’s just a scare folks, not a loss.
