Madison Wins Again

They get us every time. No, not on the football field, where the Badgers 37-21 victory managed to increase their win-loss record to just 12-48 all time against us (and just their 5-21 at home). It's in the war on the streets. It's in the bars, the pubs, and the restaurants that Madison manages to outshine the rest of the Big Ten. Make no mistake, they will out drink you, they will out eat you, they will out party you. And they don't care if they win or lose, or if there is even a game.

You may find yourself posing as an extra in a reality version of Beerfest, neck deep in a liter mug of authentic German swill at the Essen Haus, thinking that no one is possibly having more than one. But when you order your second, someone from Madison has just guzzled their fifth to chase three bratwurst and a brick of cheese. Those liter mugs...the dishwashers can't get them clean fast enough. On the night we arrived, they were out of "the boots", which hold what I would estimate as twice as much as the liter mug.

You may also find yourself exploring the scene that is State Street. Nothing like the Ann Arbor version, Madison's State Street is more akin to Bourbon Street. I can only imagine what goes on when the weather is warm. But based on the outfits of your average coed, which were just north (or south, depending on where your standing) of naked...my imagination doesn't have much room to move around. They must hand out skirts at orientation...and neglect to warn people of the dangers of frostbite. There are lines at every establishment, and they appear long. However, the speed of the lines is uncanny, most likely due to the fact that there is amazing turnover of customers going to other bars. The options are nearly endless. You are only limited by your imbibing abilities. And no matter how well you think you handle the bottle...you are not ready to go toe-to-toe with these people.

Once you have filled yourself to the brim with cocktails, you may long for a little something to soak it up. In comes the street carts. They are everywhere, and there is a variety of cuisine, from Afgan Mediterranean to fried chicken and fish. It looks as if a street fair moved in to town. So many carts, all with lines, turning out food from midnight to 3am, and probably doing enough business on Friday and Saturday nights to make a living. Actually, though I've never spent a Sunday through Thursday in Madison, I doubt that it is all that scaled down...they probably do well every night.

The real evidence that drinking is the number one varsity sport at Wisconsin? It's the student attendance at the other varsity sport, football. With 11 minutes to go in the first quarter, about 50% of the student section sat empty. And while you may think they were all weak and nursing hangovers, the truth is that they were still drinking from the night before. Friday night bar hopping rolled over into early morning tailgating, and (gasp!) an 11am local kickoff. Nice.

Also inexplicably absent from the game...the Michigan Wolverines. Whether it was looking ahead, missing Mike and Chad, or a general lack of care about a game that meant little with regards to post season aspirations...it was a loss. And while it is disappointing that we are not going to be a recovery story for the ages, there is still peace of mind available to us next Saturday. In a year marred by the worst loss ever, that's going to have to be enough.

The Tailgate...nice and quick and simple. Having been discouraged by the "alcohol free zone" at our usual Madison site, we managed to find ourselves a new tailgate spot due to some cunning undercover work at the Essen Haus. The beanbag game made a road appearance as we filled up on kitchen sink breakfast burritos with sour cream and salsa, cheesy potatoes, brownies...and beer.

Half and Half: Michigan 27, Wisconsin 13

The Wolverines fell behind for the first time this season, and posted their first scoreless quarter of the season in the first quarter on Saturday. At the half it was a worrisome 10-10 tie. The inevitable let down game was upon us. The 111,000+ on hand to see the team that dominated the Irish were slowly coming down from the clouds to realize that all the games can't be easy. There was even a light spattering of boos as the team jogged to the tunnel.

But quite possibly the most dominating defense in all of college football came out in the second half and refused to let the offense lose. They were the motivating force, and made field position every bit as important as points. The Badgers went without a first down in the second half until the five minute mark of the 4th quarter. And because of field position gained through defense and Steve Breaston, Michigan's longest drive of the day occurred in the 3rd quarter and was a paltry 56 yards. It included a Henne-to-Manningham TD (the second of the day) of the 38 yard variety. After a 42-yard punt was negated by a 27-yard Breaston return, Michigan sealed it with 4-play, 33-yard drive into the maize-clad student section. Michigan wins 27-13.

The Good Numbers:

  • Mario Manningham: 7 receptions for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns.

  • Adrian Arrington: 4 receptions for 79 yards.

  • Wisconsin rushing yards: 12

  • PJ Hill, formerly the Big Ten's leading rusher: 20 carries for 54 yards

The Bad Numbers:

  • Michigan was 2 of 13 on 3rd down

  • Chad Henne had 3 interceptions

  • Michigan gave up 236 passing yards to John Stocco, his highest total this season

  • Steve Breaston, 2 receptions for 5 yards

The Tex Mex tailgate went very well, with breakfast burritos, barbeque beef brisket, chili dogs, a plethora of chips and dips, and countless other Tex-Mex favorites.  Yucca also made its yearly appearence.

Revenge, Week 2 of 3: The Wisconsin Preview

Real quick before I start, a shout out to Jake from Motown Sports Revival, who had the dubious task of sitting in front of me at the ND game. He has a great post about "Lloydball plus risks," which a phrase he used several times throughout the game. The post includes this little gem...

Big props to my dawg from UMtailgate.com. I had the pleasure of meeting him on Saturday. He sat behind me at the game and it was enjoyable to have someone as passionate as I am to share in the joy of Michigan's monumental victory. He also whipped out a king kong sized version of one of mgoblog's shirts appropriately titled, "Notre Dame: Returning to Glory Since 1993".

Translation: "I sat in front of this nut. He was huge and donned a shirt that was so gargantuan that it could have been used for making a homeless shelter." Thanks for the shout out Jake...hope we bump into each other again.

Have you settled down yet from the weekend? Me neither. Wins like the one on Saturday stay with you for a while...weeks, months, sometimes years. At the same time, the feel good moment of the century can disappear faster than ND TV timeout (poor example). A letdown this Saturday would be, well, devastating. So here's to the boys keeping their focus for the Big Ten opener.

First of all, unlike last week, I don't hate the Badgers. I love their town. Madison, Wisconsin is a trip we look forward to every other year, and from the Essen House toState Street Brats, it never disappoints. And rarely do the Wolverines disappoint when they take the field at Camp Randall, boasting a 22-5 record there.

Michigan has the nation's leading rushing defense, the ninth ranked total defense, and is second in nation in turnover margin. So, why not relax? The unranked and overlooked Badgers have a top ten national ranking in passing efficiency defense, pass defense, and scoring defense. And they have basically the same team as last year, a team that crushed the hopes and dreams of the 2005 Michigan squad, breaking a 24-year-old Big Ten opener winning streak with a 23-20 win in Madison.

The School:

  • Enrollment: 41,169

  • Colors: Cardinal and White

  • Mascot: Badger (Bucky Badger)

  • Voted nation's #1 party school in May 2006 issue of Playboy

The records:

  • Michigan is 47-11-1 all-time against Wisconsin

  • Wisconsin is 3-0 with wins against Bowling Green, Western Illinois, and San Diego State

Watch Out For:

  • P.J. Hill, the nation's 7th leading rusher with 138 yards per game

  • John Stocco, who broke your heart with a 4-yard scramble into the endzone last year.

  • Bret Bielema, the first year head coach of the Badgers. Bret was a walk-on at Iowa before becoming a senior team captain under Hayden Fry.

Fun Facts:

  • Wisconsin is Michigan's most common opponent in Big Ten openers with 17 games. Last year was Michigan's first loss in those contests.

  • Famous alumni include Lynne Cheney (second lady), the Zucker brothersFrank Lloyd Wright, and Charles Lindbergh.

  • Bret Bielema is the second youngest coach in D1A behind Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald.

Theme: Tex Mex

Don't forget to Maize Out.

The Cheeseheads Fall Again

The End of the Home Campaign

The chilly air couldn't kill the festive mood as the UMTailgate.com family met at home for the final time this season. This year's home tailgates were easily the best in UMTailgate.com's short history, breaking attendance, alcohol, and food preparation records. Thanks to everyone that attended and participated throughout the year.

On the field, the Wolverines struggled, blowing a 14-point lead for the second straight week, this time by turning the ball over and giving up a punt return for a touchdown. But the defense prevailed in the 2nd half, not allowing the Badgers to cross the goal line, and Michigan prevailed, 21-14.

The Banquet

Following the game the crew all headed to Damon's Grill for the yearly banquet, celebrating several tailgater birthdays, another successful year of tailgating, and another successful year of Michigan football.

Cheesy: Michigan 20, Wisconsin 17

Behold the Power of Special Teams

I had more fun grasping the udders of a 20 foot tall cow with my mouth full of cheese curds than I had watching the brutal performance of the Wolverines on Saturday. Two blocked punts and a bouncing ball gave the game to the 8-2 Wolverines, 20-17. The post-game catch phrases included 'a win is a win' and 'we were owed one'... sounds like BCS material to me. The Wolverines were leap-frogged by the Illini in both polls, and we just are not the same team that beat up the Illini 45-20 in the Big House back in September. Are we getting worse every week? Or is just John Navarre getting worse every week?

In any case, we need to take everything we know about the 2001 Wolverines and throw it out the window. It's Buckeye week, and a little rookie coach made a prediction 10 months ago. Time to take care of business.

GO BLUE!
