Inception of Football's Final Four is Timed Perfectly for (Paper) Michigan

Ok, let's go the other way.  Let's pretend I don't pine for a Rich Rodriguez offense, a pipeline to Pehokee, and never huddling...ever.  Let's pretend I hated the basketball scores put up in that one Illinois game, and that I didn't jump up and down with glee with the thought of what we might do with that offense when the alumni eventually came around (still waiting) and the defense became serviceable (it didn't).

I've preached patience even in the face of the perceived immediate success of Brady Hoke.  But the truth is, we like the class that is arriving in a few weeks.  And the fact that most of them would be in the bottom (recruiting rankings wise) of the class that is supposed to arrive after that...well that means that our paper future is as bright as it has ever been.  The question mark remains whether or not Brady Hoke can coach players with great talent.  Can he manage a team full of blue chip athletes, their egos, their behavior on and off the field?  Can he build a gameplan that takes advantage of that talent?  Brady has never done that before.  Rich Rod hadn't either.

But if Brady, Borges, and Mattison CAN put it together...and I believe they can...the college football world is aligning well for Michigan.  College Football's Final Four will begin in the 2014 season, just two years from now.  It will be the biggest thing, well, EVER.  It's something they should have done 15 years ago instead of installing a system that routinely resulted in more questions than answers.  And if I'm to believe in the program in place here at Michigan, in all the grandiose NFL marketing circus-style bullshit that I'm fed by Dave Brandon, in the continuously rising ticket prices and the seemingly endless crap rotation of schedule that makes every other year's home season a steaming pile of shit...then I have to believe that when they select those four teams, Michigan will be there.  We should expect to be there.  I don't want to hear about the low-balling of team goals like winning the conference, or the handing out of motivational trinkets.  I don't want to think about Notre Dame, MSU, or OSU.

I want to see four blue-gloved fingers in the air in every practice, every pre-game, every post-game.  Final Four.  It's a realistic three-year plan.  That's where we want to be.  That's where we should be.

Michigan shared a National Championship in 1997.  A year later the powers that be installed a system to eradicate the indecisions that always seemed to pop up at season's end.  It failed, but more importantly, so did we.  Only once (2006) were we ever in the conversation (and we shouldn't have been).  It's tough to meet a goal when you never set it.  It's tough to see things in a national perspective when you can't see west of the Mississippi River or south of Columbus, and when you never concede to a home-at-home with a power team because you are afraid to skip a paycheck, instead relying on a forever crumbling Notre Dame program to bolster your schedule and excite your fans (yawn).

You think your Michigan is back?  Maybe you're right.  But THE Michigan is certainly not.  THE Michigan fears no one, takes on all comers without worrying about whether or not we can jam in eight home games.  THE Michigan has a 7-point lead before they take the field, just because they're Michigan.  Feared.  Respected.  Nationally.

We've got a resumé builder of a season ahead.  Lot's of prime time, a marquis opening weekend, and perhaps the toughest road slate ever.  Forget 11-2.  This year we need to start planning for a Denard-less offense.  We need to beat Michigan State.  We need to develop our recruits.  And that's it.  Next year, we can talk about dominating the Big Ten.  The following year, we can talk about dominating college football.

And I'm all for it.  Fuck the Rose Bowl.

Great Expectations

I'm not an avid recruiting follower.  A lot of my fellow Michigan fans are.  Knowing of my extreme fandom, these peers often come to me with questions such as "what do you think of (fill in pre-pubescent athlete here) making his visit to Ann Arbor today?"  I don't know.  I try not to be interested.  I only glance at MGoBlog's "Hello" posts.  Why?  Because I subscribe to Rich Rodriguez's policy of only talking about players that play for Michigan.  The amazing class purported to have been assembled for 2013, verbally at least, is somehow indirectly increasing the expectations of the present.  We are overrated already.  The preseason tv ratings hype machine will try to make us more and more relevant leading up to the nation's biggest game of week 1, so it's not likely that we will be hearing a lot about our current deficiencies until the Sunday morning quarterbacks hit the air waves.

The players that are here, as well as the class that is arriving in less than two-months (remember them?) are being done a disservice.  Team 133 does not have Shane Morris dropping back for passes and running Al's pro-style juggernaut.  And no matter how many letters from the Buckeyes Logan Tuley-Tillman burns, no matter how many death threats he gets from the toothless assholes of Ohio, he will be going to his high school homecoming dance as team 133 begins to fight its way through the Big Ten schedule, not helping our depth on the offensive line.  He's a Peoria Manual Ram...and yes, I had to look that up.

Michigan has a rich history to say the least.  In wins and losses, they are the greatest team of all time.  They hold significant advantages all-time over every other Big Ten team.  Teach that in your classrooms.  Explain that (slowly) to a Spartan.  Use that.

Michigan had a great season last year...when compared to the last few seasons.  But the reality is that they lost handily to a shitty Iowa team, couldn't beat Sparty, and won the Sugar Bowl over the least powerful of the BCS bowl participants on two prayer-filled blind throws.  I feel like I'm always saying this, but I will say it again anyway:  stay grounded.

It seems the fanbase so aptly known for talking about the past, is now taking to talking shit about the future.  Making your point to a rival using players that won't have an impact until 2014 or 2015 (if ever) is a tactic reserved for Notre Dame.  Ask them how much recruiting classes matter.

I'm not saying you can't be happy about this....or even this. (#1 nationally in football, #2 nationally in hoops)  But know that we are 8 months away from signing day, which is markedly more important than these seemingly never ending verbal days.  We'll be talking in the past tense about team 133 by then.  And remember, they're not all going to sign...they never do.

79 days 'til Dallas.

GO BLUE!

Weekend Roundup: Gone But Not Dead Edition 6/11/2012

  • BTN will air 15 games during the first three weekends of the season, including Michigan vs. UMASS on 9/15, which makes Michigan's first three home games (Air Force, UMASS, Illinois) 3:30pm kickoffs.  BTN Schedule | ESPN schedule | Michigan's Schedule.  Michigan will not play a noon game until at least 10/20 vs. Michigan Agricultural College (TBD), and has three night games (Bama, ND, Nebraska) to deal with in their first 8 contests.  Think the powers that be enjoyed "Under the Lights" at all?
  • Brady Hoke says Michigan's top priority remains beating Ohio State.  My top priority is that we beat Sparty...and it was my top priority last year.
  • Rittenburg/Bennett present Michigan's keys for 2012.  Bennett has a face for radio and a voice presence for blogging, but the notes are good.  Robinson's footwork, Defensive Line depth, and good health are highlighted.
  • Some future scheduling notes from AnnArbor.com, including the Wolverines looking to add more service academy games (very Notre Dame of us), the impending Pac-12 home-at-home pact, App State, and changing the UCONN venue.
  • MVictors profiles a UM memorabilia collector that is looking to move programs from every home game since 1975 (233 in all) for $1165.  I'm pretty sure the Godfather has all of those...and most of the away games.  And yet I think he might be interested in this collection, because he is an addict.
  • Women's Football academy video...suddenly becomes important because it shows Devin Gardner wearing Roy Roundtree's old number (12), further fueling the rumors of his move to receiver.
