Watch Yourself, RichRod

I've been pro-Rod since Jump Street. But I'm beginning to have second thoughts.

It's not the lawsuit, or the way he left WVU.

As I stated before, changing jobs is an ugly business. There's no good way to do it. You would think from the reaction locally to him leaving WVU and coming to Michigan that he had already done something bad to our athletic department. But he didn't. He screwed WVU, not us (and whether or not he screwed them at all is still very much in question). And while you may think that a coach that "screws over" the team he played for has questionable character and is poised to leave Michigan holding their d*cks in the future, he won't. Why? Because (cue Michigan arrogance) Michigan is the best place to play, to coach, and to live. Besides, it's not like he took the job at WVU in the off-season and split because there was better money on the table at UM (it was Lloyd Carr that did that back in 1980, and that seemed to work out).

It's not his lack of respect for The Rivalry during his opening presser. Those of you waiting for the "in 325 days in Columbus, Ohio speech" need a little reality check. That shit is reserved for the Buckeyes. The one thing that Michigan and Ohio State has in common is that they both live and die by Michigan Football. Don't worry about them, worry about us. The Game will take care of itself.

It's not the way he has handled QB recruiting and basically said "see ya" to Ryan Mallet on the Jim Rome show. Despite his cannon-like arm, Mallet is a square peg for our round hole. But more importantly, he was unhappy with the new regime. There are still some options here. Threet, Cone, and Carlos Brown (former spread QB in high school) are on the roster, and with new recruit Justin Feagin, we will survive. Terrelle Pryor has continued his blatent self-promotion to a point that I am done with him (unless he comes to Michigan). Think about this: If Pryor comes, the media will spout that RichRod is a genius, a master recruiter, and Michigan is on the right track. If Pryor falls victim to the Corvette and picks the Buckeyes, RichRod failed to meet his expectations, Tressel just won round one, and Michigan is headed down a dangerous road of uncertainty. I'LL BE DAMNED if I am going to let a seventeen-year-old punk have that kind of power. This is already a great recruiting class, and it's an unbelievable transition class. Even better, it's a national class, and not Michigan-centric. If he comes...great, if not...great. This is no where near make or break.

What is it that HAS made me question RichRod? His mistreatment of Joe Tiller.

I am now speaking directly to Coach Rodriguez: Do not underestimate the importance of Joe Tiller to Michigan football.

Ever since he lead Purdue to the Rose Bowl, his teams have been over-ranked in the pre-season. Then they win some games over inferior opponents, and their stock shoots up to a point where they are considered a national contender. One time, they even made Kyle Orton a Heisman trophy candidate. Then they play us, normally around mid-season, and they play with great passion. They give us all we can handle. Then they lose by less than a touchdown. It's great. Then they blow the rest of the season, usually falling to the likes of either Northwestern, Indiana, or Michigan State, and struggle to make a bowl. But college football is all about appearances people, and each year, or at least every other year, Purdue makes it look like we beat a good team in a good game...when the reality is that we sloppily beat a mediocre team by a slim margin. This is due, for the most part, to Joe Tiller.

Joe had this to say about Coach Rodriguez after hearing about the Roundtree coup:

If we had an early signing date, you wouldn't have another outfit with a guy in a wizard hat selling snake oil get a guy at the last minute, but that's what happened."

You're right Joe. That was unfair. You know what? I don't even want this kid on our team anymore. He's of questionable character. He's all set to go to Purdue to push to break their 9th place tie with Northwestern for all time Big Ten titles (8) and here comes Michigan. Mr. Wizard (RichRod) with his snake oil (scholarship to school with most wins, highest winning percentage, most conference titles, three-and-a-half-decade-bowl streak, and major national media exposure) charming away this kid without a care for Joe Tiller and his program. The only way this can be resolved is by a public apology to Joe. So that's what I expect from you Rich. Sack up and say you're sorry. Wear that wizard hat to the press conference too. I'd like to see that thing.

40 Days, 40 Nights, 40 Posts

During the offseason here at UMTailgate.com, I seem to divide my time evenly between posts that are "catch up" oriented and posts that are apologetic for a long period of time between posts. This one should cover both of those.

First we catch up...

Coach Rodriguez is in a legal battle with his alma mater. There are a lot of opinions out there about this from the Michigan side, but most are complaining for the sake of complaining. Those that dislike RichRod and his apparent negative press pile are the same people that would be talking about Les Miles being just another Lloyd. West Virginia won their bowl game without Coach Rodriguez. Les Miles beat Ohio State. Lloyd beat Florida. The bowls results aligned against this new regime from an appearance standpoint. But don't let the beginning of January dissuade you from the decision you supported just six weeks ago. For years you've complained, you asked for change, you wanted more from those four and five star recruits, you wanted speed, unpredictability...don't dare deny it. And now it's here, so don't be scared when the school that didn't want to meet Rodriguez's demands decides to wage a war of words on him. This is your coach. You support him. You don't bail on him before he even gets to take the field. Sack up.

Terrelle Pryor commits at noon today. Brace for an overreaction either way. I plan to embrace him as the next coming of Christ if he picks the Blue. I plan to call him a crooked, overrated pile of shit if he picks the Buckeyes. He's most likely somewhere in between. I'm just as interested in the good press as I am the player at this point.

The stadium currently looks like a medieval castle. There's a 25 foot deep trench all the way around it. It's freaking me out more and more each day. It will not host the spring game this year...but there are some rumors floating about that there will still be a game, perhaps at Ford Field.

The basketball team kinda sucks.

Ok, that's it for the catch up.

The apology: Sorry it's been so long between posts. As penance, and in the interest of Lent, I will post every day from today until Easter. Seems to be better, more fun, and more beneficial than giving some food item up. Seriously. That's the plan. So...we're back tomorrow with Pryorfest. See you then.

The Perfect Storm

The game plan, the situation, the timing...There are those that put more time into the analysis of the game and to scrutinizing the recruiting process but if you watched Rich Rod's former team Wednesday night none of that information was required to be excited about what the future holds at Michigan.

It feels like the perfect storm. Lloyd gets the respect he deserves (and I'm at the front of the line despite my numerous critical posts) and the seniors finally put it together. The game plan and execution were amazing.

And as I watch the fiesta bowl I can't but think my god that's our offense! Our bowl game had me dreaming of yesteryear but I dream of more today.

The one prevailing thought? Jesus Christ those guys are fast!

No doubt there will be bumps on the road during our transition but if Rich Rodriguez can carry the program with half the class as Lloyd we'll be in good shape. However I'm a little concerned about what seems to be, at least publicly, a lack of enthusiasm for the job. No doubt Rich is playing both sides but I think it's too late. WV already hates him. He might as well show a little more enthusiasm for being at Michigan. Even if this is a stepping stone for the pros he seems too even keeled for what has happened over the last month. Maybe he needs to settle in first, hire his staff, and get things going his way. But at some point I'd like to know he's not just here to spite his previous AD. If it was so hard to leave wouldn't it mean taking the Michigan job would out-weigh any regret or sorrow that leaving created?

The posturing in the media by both sides is tiring and frankly pathetic, immature and self-indulging. It's understandable and I realize the feelings are natural when you have your heartbroken like West Virginia is portraying. But as far as Rodriguez is concerned, it might be more difficult to turn down love.

If I learnt anything in 2007 its that there's more to life than football. But when football is your life you better be sure you're surrounded by the necessary requirements to live...and I'm thankful for being able to say proudly, I have been given these. Family is defined by the individual. And individuals make the family. And fittingly, Lloyd Carr would always quote "The strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack."

So for 2008 I wish Bill Stewart and the Mountaineers the best of luck and may Rich Rodriguez find comfort and success for however long he decides to stay in Ann Arbor. Most importantly, a thank you to Lloyd, you made my experience at Michigan magical and my continued support honorable. Cheers.

The Weekend Roundup: "Fiesta" Edition : 12/17/2007

It's a party. You're invited.

To say that RichRod's exodus to A2 is on the tongue of the collective mainstream media would be a gross understatement. Everybody has weighed in, and have done so with similar opinions: amazing hire, welcome to the 21st century, the Wolverines are back. All great things, all nearly unsurmountable expectations. If RichRod lives up to the hype, the Wolverines will be an unstoppable machine in a new stadium. If he doesn't, we will be relegated to "same poop, different pants." We should land somewhere in the middle. Continuing our winning tradition, but doing so with a new level of excitement.

The expectation will no longer be with the position. The gameplan will change. No longer will we line up and say that "this is Michigan football," same as it was last week, and same as it was the last time you played us. Change. Change that is bigger than a coach and his philosophies. It's a change in attitude. Swagger. Chest bumps. Heisman poses. Confusing the sweatervest. Fun. Real big fun. And you won't have to wait until August...because there will be a SPRING GAME.

Steel wool would be required to remove the smile from my face right now.

The internets provided ample content this weekend while you and Kramer figured out just how far you could go:
